Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health
The term 'mental health' means different things to different people but in essence it's about how we think, feel, behave and cope with life.
Emotions are a part of our everyday lives and affect us all. You may feel up and down, but that's normal – we all feel like that at times. It is important to recognise that even if you are not feeling down, looking after our own emotional well-being is just as vital as looking after our physical health.
Feeling happy, excited or full of confidence is accepted as normal and is often in response to positive events or situations. In a similar way feeling stressed, low in mood, anxious or angry is often a normal reaction to challenging or difficult situations in life.
But if negative thoughts and feelings become so frequent and/or severe that they disrupt our ability to cope with daily life, then they can develop into mental health problems.
