Personal, Social and Health Education

PSHE at Fox Grove

Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) and Relationship and Sex education (RSE) helps to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives. At Fox Grove, we aim to equip our pupils for life outside school and the role they take on after education including enabling them to make informed choices and opinions about all aspects of their lives.

The aims of PSHE at Fox Grove School are to:

  • Promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of all pupils
  • Prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life
  • Encourage pupils to value themselves and others
  • Allow pupils to acknowledge and appreciate difference and diversity
  • Teach students how to make informed choices
  • Teach students to understand what constitutes a safe and healthy lifestyle
  • Promote safety in forming and maintaining relationships
  • Help students to identify the characteristics of healthy relationships, how relationships may affect mental and physical health and how to stay safe online.
  • Provide students with a toolkit for understanding and managing their emotions.
  • Provide a framework in which sensitive discussions can take place
  • Create a positive culture around issues of sexuality and relationships
  • Teach pupils the correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies
  • Prepare pupils for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene
  • Help pupils develop feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy

The Fox Grove PSHE Curriculum draws on the statutory programmes of study for PSHE and RSE education as well as the PSHE Association Framework for Pupils with SEND, the Compassionate School Framework and Trauma-Informed Education approaches.

Our PSHE curriculum is delivered through the Jigsaw programme and is fully aligned with the statutory requirements for Relationships Education and Health Education, as set out by the Department for Education. It also supports pupils’ wider personal, social, emotional and mental health development, in line with the aims of the PSHE Association.
The curriculum is organised into six key areas, which are taught progressively across the school to ensure age appropriate sequencing and coverage.
BM – Being Me in My World
Who am I and how do I fit?
Pupils develop a sense of identity and belonging, learning about rights, responsibilities, and how to contribute positively to the school community.
CD – Celebrating Difference
This unit promotes respect for others, understanding similarity and difference, challenging stereotypes, and addressing bullying behaviour, in line with statutory guidance on respect and equality.
DG – Dreams and Goals
Pupils learn to set personal goals, develop resilience, and understand the role of effort, perseverance and emotions in achieving success.
HM – Healthy Me
This area supports the statutory Health Education requirements, including physical and mental wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, and learning how to keep safe and make informed choices.
RL – Relationships
In line with statutory Relationships Education, pupils learn how to build and maintain positive, healthy relationships, including friendship skills, kindness, respect, and appropriate behaviour.
CM – Changing Me
Pupils are supported to understand change and manage transitions positively, developing strategies for emotional wellbeing and self care as they grow and develop.
Each of the six sections outlined above is subdivided into age appropriate topic areas across Key Stages 1 and 2, and Key Stages 3 and 4, ensuring clear coverage and progression.
When sequencing the content of our PSHE curriculum, careful consideration has been given to building on pupils’ prior learning and understanding. As key topics and themes are revisited, pupils are supported to consolidate previous knowledge and apply their learning to new information and a wider range of contexts. This spiral approach ensures learning is progressive, relevant, and developmentally appropriate.
